Most people keep moving from practitioner to practitioner because their pain or dysfunction is never resolved.
The Neuro Musculoskeletal doctors at Optimal Performance Clinic are experts in accurately diagnosing the true source of your pain and/or dysfunction and put together hands-on recovery protocols that lead to long-lasting, pain-free movement. We never chase symptoms and neither should you.
1. Diagnose the source.
2. Restore functionality.
3. Build strength:
No quick fixes.
We put you on the path to pain-free, full range of motion for optimal performance.
We diagnose the disassociation between your movements and your body to first restore optimal functionality and then strengthen your body for enhanced performance, making you fluid, functional and flexible.
Recovery is a two-step process: Correct diagnosis of the problem and restoration of natural movements.
Long-lasting recovery results from permanently improved load-bearing muscle cells.
Experience fluid, functional, flexible movements so you move younger and perform better.
Our goal is to help you be the best version of yourself!
Our experience has taught us that focusing treatments on resolving symptomatic pain and exercises to strengthen something that isn’t functioning correctly is a recipe for failure or at best – temporary pain relief.
We focus on restoring the body’s natural and intended mobility/movement, which in turn resolves your injury and unleashes your body’s potential.
Not a Professional Athlete? That’s Not a problem! We believe that everyone deserves to have the same level of expertise and care at their disposal. Aren’t we all that important in our own lives! We have treated thousands of patients who have suffered sports injuries, day-to-day aches and pains, motor vehicle accident injuries, or work-related injuries.
You are not just a patient to me. I have dedicated my career to helping others, and to me that means first and foremost listening to each and every one of you.
Unfortunately it is all too common that the patient is not listened to, therefore their needs are never met. It is my promise to you that I will listen to you, empower you to know how to unleash your body’s potential by properly diagnosing the cause of your injury, so that a successful treatment plan can be created.
I simply won’t settle for anything more than the best – that’s what I give each and every one of my patients. It’s what everyone deserves – Their doctors’ undivided attention, and the most up to date information and diverse skill set, in order to provide the most effective care possible.
I treat every person that walks through my door as they are my extended family. I dedicate myself to helping them in any way possible. This includes connecting my patients with my network of specialists when needed, connecting with their doctors and or trainers in order to ensure the best recovery possible.

Dr. Elna Johnson (Formerly Dr. Muñoz) utilizes her knowledge gained by her various degrees, certifications, and professional experiences, to assess the way your body moves. She strongly believes that by focusing on biomechanics (human movement), you are able to determine the issues that are causing the issues. Her experience both professionally and as a former elite athlete has shown her that focusing on the site of pain is the most common way to overlook the cause of the issue. This consequently almost never provides a solution to your issue(s). Her focus is to ensure that all parts of your body are moving optimally, in order to be able to perform pain-free and at its best.
Dr. Elna's approach to healthcare is to diagnose the cause of your injuries, and get you back to doing what you love to do. Over the last 15 years, this successful approach to care has given Dr. Elna the opportunity to have worked with numerous professional and Olympic athletes and teams.

“I had tried everything to get over a long lasting IT band injury and nothing seemed to work. I honestly didn’t think I would run anything over 5km again. It wasn’t until I finally went in for an assessment, got fit for the right custom orthotics and started using the Trigger Point Therapy products, that I had the confidence to enter such a major event as the del Sahara 100km run across the Sahara Desert.
I finished pain free!”

As a professional dancer and choreographer I have learned over the years that physical and mental recovery is VITAL to peak performance. I’ve also learned that not all physical therapists and specialists provide the same level of care and physical relief. I have personally sought out Dr. Elna when various tours brought me to Vancouver because I have never felt the same level of relief from anyone else. Her hands are ELITE and her approach to physical therapy is 110% comprehensive. To put it in simpler terms, you can look all you want but you aren’t going to find a better practitioner than Dr Elna Johnson!

“In my 13 years of professional football both spent in the CFL and NFL I have come across many good therapists. Dr. Munoz (Elna) is one of the best and when I have an issue I always have full confidence that she can get it resolved and have me on the field as soon as possible.”
Coach / Athlete
I am the first to admit that I am very jaded when it comes to many medical professionals, and for good reason. In the past 30 years, I have had many bad experiences, and from a wide array of doctors I thought I could trust.
Elna is a tremendous doctor and human being. She puts the needs of her patients first. She speaks and acts in a way that is very empowering, and she
builds her clients up, both mentally and physically. Words are tremendously powerful and can make or break someone. Many medical professionals speak in a way that makes people feel like they are completely broken, dysfunctional, and simply scared of moving or breathing the wrong way. I cringe when I think about how many doctors spoke to me. Back then, I was a shell of the person I am now. Words matter, and Elna empowers with her words and actions.
Unlike most, Elna is always looking to address the cause of the issue, and does not blindly treat symptoms (I call this symptom chasing) like many others do when they do not or cannot address the root of the issue. Very few are gifted enough to be able to identify the cause of the issues, and in a timely manner. As a result many people do not get better, or at least it causes them a significant amount of physical, mental, and financial hardship in the process.
Elna always looks to address the root issue, and wants to get you back to full health as quickly as possible. Furthermore, Elna strives to make all of her clients very independent, and not reliant or desperate for her services. This is the sign of a very competent and ethical practitioner. Whenever see Elna, I have full trust in her.
Something else I really respect about Elna is that she is the first to admit if she is not sure about something, and she will always seek a second opinion from another qualified expert. This quality is so rare.
Whenever I work with Elna she puts me at ease, and I always know she has my best interest at heart. It also feels like a total team effort. While I am very hesitant to recommend many doctors due to my past experiences (and I have a big advantage as due to what I do for my career I know a lot more than
the average person), I would recommend Elna in a heartbeat. She is in a league of her own.
Thank you for everything Elna. I am turning 41 in less than a month and have never felt so healthy and physically capable in my entire life.
What is a
Neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) doctors have 4 years of training that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving nerves, muscles, soft tissue, and
bones/joints. People are more familiar with the title musculoskeletal specialist which is what was used for decades but recently [XYZ] added Neuro since we also work with peripheral nerve entrapments.
The majority of neuromusculoskeletal specialists have a degree in Chiropractic with additional training in soft tissue therapy techniques such as Active Release Techniques (ART). The expertise of an NMSK doctor is in using his or her hands to assess and treat acute and chronic conditions as it relates to function/ proper movement.
What conditions would a patient be suffering from?
- sports injuries
- performance enhancement
- achilles tendinopathy
- tendinitis / tendinopathies
- sprain / strain
- neck pain
- upper, middle and low back pain
- shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand pain/ injury
- pelvis, hip, knee, ankle, and foot pain/ injury
- nerve entrapments and related numbness and tingling
- thoracic outlet syndrome
- TMJ dysfuntion ( jaw pain)
- repetitve strain injuries (eg. workplace injuries from desk work)
- tennis elbow
- golfers elbow
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- shin splits
- plantar fasciitis / fasciosis

Who should see a neuromusculoskeletal medicine doctor?
Anyone with a problem affecting the musculoskeletal system (or neuromusculoskeletal system), whatever the cause of the problem or their age. NMSK doctors do not just see patients with sports injuries. The patients with sports and exercise-related injuries range from professional elite athletes to those taking occasional recreational exercise.
NMSK doctors see people with a huge range of problems, including work-related injuries or symptoms such as work-related upper limb disorder (like carpal tunnel
syndrome) and other problems related to office or manual work.
What should you expect when you see one of OPC’s NMSK doctors?
Tough question as we create a specific treatment plan for each individual and for each specific injury. There are no specific tests or procedures – we take learnings from all of our various degrees and put together the best plan for each
We do a comprehensive history and physical exam to determine the cause of the issue and create a specific treatment plan for that individual and her/his chief
complaint. We can use ARTs, Graston, cold laser, fascial release, motor retraining, rehabilitation exercises, range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, cupping, home care, functional range conditioning techniques for joint
AROM and joint mobilization.
